Public bodies, including local-authority-maintained schools, are covered by the public sector equality duty in the Equality Act 2010.
As part of our duties we publish:
- an Equalities Information profile of our school based upon the protected characteristics of the Equality Act 2010 – this is updated and published every year
- our school’s Equality Objectives – these are reviewed annually and updated at least once every 4 years
- for further information please view or download our Equalities Policy and Equalities Information and Objectives Policy in the School Policies section of our website.
Miss Teasdale is our LGBT+ lead member of staff. We are currently (January 2023) working towards a silver award for ‘Educate and Celebrate’.
At Bearpark Primary School, we respect each other’s age, class, gender, gender reassignment, disabilities, health needs, marriage or civil partnership, pregnancy, race and nationality, religion or belief, sex, sexual orientation and size.
Bearpark Primary School are taking part in the Educate and Celebrate Best Practice Programme. The award programme is designed to ensure that schools are transformed into LGBT+ friendly places. We aim to provide an environment where all feel valued and free from discrimination, reflecting the world in its rich diversity. We have achieved our Bronze level award and are currently working towards gaining the Silver award.
Ofsted recognises Educate & Celebrate as Best Practice for taking a whole-school approach to tackling homophobic, biphobic and transphobic bullying and ingrained attitudes in schools, stating this approach has been highly successful and as Innovative and Visionary.
The main idea is to adopt a ‘usualising’ approach in order to teach children about LGBT+ people. Bullying is therefore reduced because LGBT+ people no longer seem ‘unusual’. We have worked hard to develop our curriculum and incorporate LGBT+ knowledge into lessons which has had an impact on students’ knowledge and understanding of LGBT+ people and issues. Removing the stigma in this way undermines HBT bullying and creates an environment in which it can be more readily challenged.
